Kitchen cabinets, installed. This is the corner that used to contain the old built-in cabinet.
The corner of the kitchen. The wall cabinets in the center will have glass doors. Above the cabinets, we're going to build a soffet to the edge of the end cabinets. Small halogen lights will be recessed in front of the center cabinets.

You can get a good idea of the space we're working with. Other than the cabinet on the far left of the picture, the other cabinets are accurately placed in the room. That cabinet will hold the sink underneath the high window. Appliances will fill the other gaps.
Another shot of the kitchen. You can see the plumbing for the sink beneath the window. We've also patched the wall behind the sink. We will tile a backsplash over that, so that wall can be considered prepped.
Detail shot of the area behind the corner cabinet. Because the HVAC duct runs up this corner, we built a frame to hang a small cabinet in front of it. Once the cabinets are finished, this duct will be invisible, and the corner cabinet will look deep, unless it gets opened.

The screws used. From left to right: Short aluminum for anchoring to 1x3's, blues for anchoring to brick and stone, 3" galvinized for working with 2x4's, and the screws that came with the cabinets. Guess which ones we haven't used yet.

The kitchen diagram. For reference, the corner with the duct is signified by the shaded square. The sink window is at the top of the picture.

The floors are finished. In a word - they look amazing. It's a total shift of character in the house. Stunning, really. The folks at Coventry Floors did a remarkable job.
Riley spent much of Saturday cleaning the new floors.
A shot down the hall. Just look at the reflection.
Back the other way down the hall. All that's left here is cleaning up the mouldings and a final paint job. Oh yeah, and that crack in the far corner.
Upstairs in the attic, we went for the painted look. It's a bit more relaxing. It fits the final studio use of the space better.
Tools for sanding steps: Hand sander, sand paper, hammer, and dust mask. The extension cord runs to the steps below. Sanding steps causes an amazing amount of dust - and it gets -EVERYWHERE- Trust me on this.
The top 4 steps haven't been done yet. The bottom 7 have had a quick pass each. We're going to be painting them, so we're not looking for perfection here - just smoothness.
While I'm in the attic. Some more drywall was applied to the ceiling. The tough part is gonna be working the bend in the ceiling.
A close-up of some of the dowels we put in the floor. They actually look pretty cool where they've been polyurethaned. A neat effect.
The living room has become the staging area as we work in the kitchen. Cardboard boxes from the cabinets serve as a great floor protectant.
The basement is now our work area. Pretty convenient, actually. We won't have to move this until we're finished, now.
Woodpiles - gone. At least some of them. With the heat, nothing's been growing out back, so there's been no need for the landscaper since his initial visit. Up next, finish the painting, finish the kitchen, trim and baseboards. Let's go!
